Wrapped up in Memories

After the death of my friend Joyce's husband, and Daniel's dad, I asked Joyce if he would like a Daddy quilt from some of his dad's clothes.  Joyce talked it over with Daniel and YES he did so they went through his clothing and picked out the pieces that Daniel wanted included.  What a variety of items/fabrics I received to use for his quilt. And yes, I needed to include some of each of them..... fleece, sweatshirt, denim, cotton, knit, thick pieces and very thin pieces.  Also had to have some logos and labels. I also chose to have plackets and some zippers and pockets so it would not just be squares of fabric, but pieces that were recognizable as to what they were.

This was a design as you go quilt with no specific size or pattern to it. I first cut out the pieces that HAD to be in it, then grew the quilt around them.  It is not a "true" quilt as there are not 3 layers sandwiched together. Daniel wanted it to be really soft and there was enough weight in the top alone. I found a wonderful polartec fleece for the back that was large enough that I didn't have to piece it. It served as the batting and the backing, as well as the binding. I rolled it from the back to the front, after doing stitch in the ditch quilting on the quilt, and zigzagged it on, mitering the corners. I wanted the quilt sturdy enough for a young boy's energy.

Over the weekend when we were at our kids' I had made arrangements to deliver the quilt to Daniel. Due to illness on my part, I had to give that honor to my husband.  Joyce sent me some pictures of Daniel when he saw his quilt. I think he is quite pleased. I hope it brings him much comfort as he misses his daddy.

  1. What a wonderful thing you did for him, I have no doubt he will always treasure that quilt! I knew you were working on it, but I don't think I knew you got it finished in time for your trip. Sorry to hear you were sick and couldn't give it to him in person!
