Family
I had an enjoyable visit with Mom yesterday. She seems very content at the care facility, even if she can't remember that it is where she lives now. The staff loves her and enjoys her kidding and fun attitude towards life. This is Mom's birthday month so I did a little "testing" of her mental being yesterday. She was thrilled to learn it is November as it would soon be her birthday. I asked her if she knew how old she was going to be and no she didn't. I asked what year she was born and she knew that (1921). I told her that this is 2012. Then I asked if she could then determine how old she was going to be. She was not able to do that. Mom has been very good (much better/faster than me) at doing math in her head. Her not being able to figure this out is an indication that there is more mental decline going on. Of course, it could just have been the day, but I don't think so. I will "test" her some more soon and see.
My sibs are coming to town for an early family Thanksgiving dinner this year -- combination of late birthday for Mom and early Thanksgiving for us. Dinner will be at my sister's now that Mom's house has sold and we are in a much smaller place. It's nice to see my sister taking charge of things a bit more. I think when she was working anything extra was more than she could handle, but now that she is retired she is a bit more relaxed and is doing a bit more, which includes visiting Mom more. Good stuff.
Now to get my Christmas gifts for our kids finished up and ready to take with us for Thanksgiving (the "real" one) when we plan to go down and spend it with them. I'm not sure we'll be able to go at Christmas too, time and finances and weather will tell.

It sounds like overall your mom is doing well, even if there may be a slight decline. She's enjoying life, which is a joy to hear. How nice that your siblings will be gathering at your sister's place this year, which gives you a break. Will you be picking your mom up to attend, or will everyone be going over to where she lives for a visit?
