Step One: Background Painting

It's time to get going on a few more thread painted pictures.  I have several drawings printed out in a sketch form, all set  and ready to begin the process in my thread painting...
1. Painting the background for the piece.
I mainly use Derwent Inktense blocks for the 'paint'.  They are used with water (sometimes I use clear Aloe Vera gel).  I also have a water based fabric paint that I will use for some applications.
2. After the paint is dry I set it with my hot iron.
3. Draw more detail in with a lightbox and a Frixion pen, which will disappear when you iron it (or put it close to a heater.
4. Attach stabilizer to the back (can't use heat set if you have detail drawn on with heat sensitive pen). I use a temporary spray adhesive for this.
5. Choose threads for the painting.
6. Put on background music (or movie); Grab a large glass of water; Don't forget the bowl of chocolates.
7. Turn on the machine and start painting!

  1. Thanks for sharing! I love seeing the process of how techniques are done! After seeing how you painted on your fabric I was reminded of one of the very first projects I did with our guild when I joined 15 years ago; we were painting on fabric and I ended up painting a bluebird surrounded by a berry wreath. I never knew what to do with it, but what a great idea to do some painting with thread on it as well! It would make a pretty picture.
