Family Time?

Well, kind of, sort of.  My DH's ex-sister-in-law and our niece (her daughter) came for an overnight visit yesterday. (To us, she is family whether we are truly related or not.) We had such a delightful time. It was interesting as we were visiting that DH and I learned about some things about his mother that we had not known about. People are so interesting.

It was so nice catching up on everyone's life. Our niece Casey is doing quite well now. She has health challenges, but she is doing all she can to be as healthy as she can be. She is a Purple Heart recipient from the Iraq War and is going to college with the goal of helping vets with mental health issues. She is an amazing young woman, and her heart is so much into helping other vets deal with the issues they have and to fight for better benefits for vets.

But, the most fun, in a way, was discovering that Marti's favorite pie is a cherry pie. I did not know this before they got here and guess what I had made for our dessert last night?  Yep, a fresh cherry pie! WooHoo!  And by the way, it is so delicious! In fact, DH absolutely loves rhubarb pie and he said this pie has taken its place. Now that is a compliment!

DH and I just enjoyed our second piece, which a nice dollop of whipped cream on top AND we have another piece each to enjoy tomorrow. Ah, life is good. The recipe I found on http://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/fresh-cherry-pie-10000001816376/  I used actual pie cherries so I increased the sugar to 1 1/2 cups. I also added some ground almonds to my pastry. Next time I will toast them first, but they made a great addition.
